How the Blackhawks got their nicknames
Okay, tumblr, you suck because I waited forever for someone to post this today and NOT ONE OF YOU DID anywhere that I could find at least. And this article is an absolute GEM, okay?
Starting with this bit from Jonathan Toews
Who’s got the most fun hockey name to say on the team?
“I like to call ‘Kaner’ [Patrick Kane] … ‘Little Peekaboo.’
Why?
“I don’t know … just because of ‘PK,’ that’s kind of where that comes from.”
especially when paired with this utter delight (Still from Johnny):
Jamal Mayers says guys are starting to call Kane “Kanye” now …
” ‘Kanye?’ Well, we like to call ‘Jammer’ [Jamal Mayers] ‘Jam Diggity,’ too. That’s my favorite one. ‘Jam Diggity.’ It’s just like that song, ‘No Diggity.’ It fits ‘Jammer.’”
And then they talk to Brandon Saad:
It sounds like ‘Manchild’ is catching on, huh?
“Yeah, I think that one that might stick with me. I think ‘Sharpie’ [Patrick Sharp] came up with the ‘Manchild’ thing. It seems to be sticking with some guys. I just embrace it and it is what it is.”
Did you have any nicknames before turning pro?
“When I was younger, they called me ‘BS’ because of my initials.”
Seriously? Saader’s better than “BS,” right?
“Oh, for sure. I might even like ‘Manchild’ better than that.”
